Kids on Public Lands
On Sept. 20-21, 2008, members of the San Bernardino
National Forest Off Highway Volunteers, various off highway groups, the
local YMCA and the Anaheim Police
Athletic League will be conducting a weekend event at Big Bear Lake in the
San Bernardino National forest. The objective is to bring
100 kids between the ages of 8-13, who may never have been out of the city, to the
National Forest. On Saturday, 50 boys will ride a bus from Anaheim to
the base of operations at the Big Bear Discovery Center. Forest
Service employees and volunteers will talk to the kids about our forests and
their many uses. Demonstrations include fire prevention, motorcycle
demonstration, creatures of the forest (the stuffed animal version) and a
law enforcement best friend--a well trained dog. Hamburgers and
hot dogs are prepared by volunteers. But the highlight of the day is a
ride in a Jeep along a backcountry road. The whole process begins
again on Sunday with 50 girls.
This event will involve the efforts of over 120 volunteers, a variety of 4x4 vehicles
and Ham radio operators. We intend to give the kids a new experience that could
change the way they view themselves or the people around them.
Off Highway escorts will be available for members of the media and their
kids.
